In children if proteinuria is detected on urine dipstick test, should be repeated twice more on
two separate occasions, and if negative, deemed "transient" and benign. If either subsequent test is positive, patient has "persistent proteinuria" and should be referred to a pediatric nephrologist to work up the cause.
